Walkoff Winner From Steigleder Lifts 'Cats Over Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern defeated Illinois 1-0 on an 89th minute winner from Regan Steigleder at Martin Stadium on Thursday night.
The Wildcats improved to 6-4-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Big Ten while dropping their rivals Illinois to 4-7.
For the second straight game, Northwestern scored a goal with less than 90 seconds left in regulation. After mounting pressure throughout the second half, sophomore Josie Aulicino delivered a perfect corner kick with just over one minute on the clock. Steigleder headed it home at the near post to give the Wildcats the lead with her second goal of the season.
The 'Cats improved to 3-0 at home, despite playing just three of their 11 games at Martin Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood made six saves for the shutout, her third of the season. Her best effort came in the first half when she palmed a shot off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
The Wildcat backline, led by Danika Austin, Emma Phillips, Ella Hase, Hallie Pearson and Julietta Thron did well on the day to limit the Illinois offense.
Northwestern is back in action on Sunday at Martin Stadium when it hosts Nebraska. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed on B1G+.
