EVANSTON, Ill. – In a tumultuous afternoon that featured multiple lightning delays and a venue change from Martin Stadium to Ryan Fieldhouse, the 'Cats prevailed 2-1 over Nebraska for their second win in a row on Sunday.
The 'Cats are unbeaten in their last four and with 10 points in five conference games (3-1-1), they are tied for third place in the Big Ten with Michigan State. The team is 7-4-1 overall, and have gone 6-1-1 in their last eight contests after starting the season 1-3.
The Wildcat superstars delivered on Sunday, with Josie Aulicino and Regan Steigleder continuing their fine goalscoring form this season. Aulicino scored in the first half after poking home a deflected cross off of a strong run from junior Aurea Martin.
Aulicino scored her team-high sixth goal of the season, tied for fourth most in the Big Ten. She improved her point total on the season to 19, tied for the eighth most in a season in program history with Katie Hertz (1998) and Brenna Lovera (2018). It is the fourth most points in a season by a Wildcat under Michael Moynihan (2012-present) and the most by a midfielder.
The first half, while delayed 45 minutes, took place outdoors. After lightning in the area during halftime, the Wildcats completed the rest of the game indoors in Ryan Fieldhouse with no fans present. Nebraska upped its intensity in attempts to regain a foothold, but Steigleder stomped them out in the 51st minute.
The graduate midfielder took a shot from distance that was ruled a handball on a Husker defender. Steigleder steppe upd herself and sent her penalty to the corner, even with the goalkeeper guessing correctly, to make it 2-0.
Nebraska eventually pegged one back in the 85th minute and kept the game alive in a few frantic final minutes, but Northwestern was able to hold on for the win. The Huskers' goal made Steigleder's tally the game winner, giving her two in a row after her 89th minute header against Illinois on Thursday.
Steigleder upped her season totals to three goals and seven points. She now has 11 goals in her career, the fourth most under Michael Moynihan and one away from Niki Sebo. Steigleder appeared in her 81st career game, one away from third place in the all-time list, held by her former teammate Marisa Viggiano.
The Wildcats will await the latest RPI rankings on Monday, and look to keep their hot form going with just one game this week. The 'Cats welcome a strong Indiana team, currently ranked No. 35 in RPI and 8-2-3 overall, to Martin Stadium on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff.
