COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 4 Northwestern dominated the No. 7 ranked Maryland Terrapins 3-1 for the Wildcats' first Big Ten win of the season.
Bente Baekers and Clara Roth were the highlights of the Wildcat offense, both grabbing a goal of their own as well as an assist. Baekers assisted Maddie Zimmer on her third goal of the season. Annabel Skubisz put in another great performance in the goal, with six saves.
Both teams had a strong showing on defense in the first quarter, going back and forth across midfield to keep the offense cold. Northwestern managed to grab the first and only shot on goal, but it was all tied up 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The 'Cats opened up the second quarter with a quick goal to take the advantage. Zimmer jumped a Terrapin pass to come up with the defensive stop and the Wildcats put on the gas to get completely ahead of the Maryland defense. Without a defender in sight, Baekers passed it off to Zimmer who was easily able to finish on the 2 on 1 opportunity.
With a 1-0 lead coming into the second half, it was all about turning great defense to great offense. Late in the third quarter, Roth put in the extra effort to get ahead of her defenders and doubled Northwestern's advantage, tipping the ball just over the goal line.
The 'Cats opened up the final quarter with a penalty opportunity that Baekers was able to capitalize on with an absolute rocket into the back of the cage.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action this Sunday as they travel to Penn State to face off against the No. 8 ranked Nittany Lions at 11 am CT.
