UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Northwestern toppled No. 12 Penn State 2-1 on the road Thursday night for its signature win of the season.
The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 1 in the latest RPI rankings. It was the Wildcats' first win at Penn State in program history.
Northwestern improved to 5-4 on the season, despite playing just two of nine contests at home. The 'Cats dropped Penn State, who was picked first in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, to 6-3.
The goals came in the first half from senior Kaylee Titus and sophomore Josie Aulicino. Titus scored the first goal of her career on a beautiful curling effort on a corner kick routine, and it could not have come at a better time.
Aulicino scored the second goal in the 36th minute, her team-high fifth of the season. The pass came from senior forward Olivia Stone in transition after Regan Steigleder won the ball in the midfield.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood made four saves. The entire Wildcat backline turned in a massive performance, keyed by center backs Hallie Pearson, Danika Austin, and Emma Phillips.
Northwestern's last ranked win was also against Penn State, a 1-0 home shutout on September 20, 2018. It was the 'Cats best ranked win since defeating No. 11 Rutgers in 2015.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday to finish off their Big Ten-opening road swing when they take on Maryland. Kickoff from College Park is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed on B1G+.
