Wildcats Split Day Two of Chicago Cup

9/19/2021 12:17:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats split their second day of the Chicago Cup falling to DePaul 3-2, but sweeping Loyola 3-0 later in the day.

Northwestern started the day with a hard-fought loss against DePaul in five sets. Temi Thomas-Ailara led the Northwestern offense with 20 kills. Leilani Dodson followed with 16 kills and three blocks. Hannah Lesiak put in solid work on the back line, positing 15 digs in addition to 12 kills.

The 'Cats made their comeback against the Ramblers with a huge crowd of Wildcats cheering them on at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Thomas-Ailara led the offense with 12 kills, three blocks and two aces. Lesiak followed close behind with eight kills and two aces of her own. In fact, Northwestern had huge success from the service line, notching six aces to just two from Loyola.

The Wildcats dominated the first set early, capturing a seven point lead early which featured two aces from Thomas-Ailara. The 'Cats put on a show with Thomas-Ailara, Ella Grbac and Alexa Rousseau registering three kills apiece while Lesiak grabbed the final kill of the set to put her at four kills and win the set 25-20.

A competitive second set slowly turned in the Wildcat's favor after a pair of aces from Lesiak and Ariel Amaya. Dodson and Thomas-Ailara put the punctuation mark on the second set with a stuff at the net and took the win 25-21 – putting Northwestern ahead two sets to none.

The third and final set was just as tightly contested as the previous set, but once again the 'Cats came through and won the match with a 25-22 set win. Kills from the entire frontline kept Northwestern in business throughout the set and kept them from falling far behind Loyola.

The Wildcats will be back at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT for their first game of conference play against No. 6 Nebraska.
