EVANSTON, Ill. – With a strong defensive effort and another goal from sophomore Josie Aulicino, Northwestern blanked DePaul 1-0 at Martin Stadium on Sunday afternoon for its third straight win.
The Wildcats improved to 4-3 at the conclusion of the non-conference schedule, playing just two of the seven games at home. The 'Cats dropped the Blue Demons to 2-5.
Aulicino scored the game's lone goal in the first half after receiving a ball in the box from Olivia Stone. Aulicino turned her defender, fired a shot, picked up her rebound in stride and powered home the ball to make it 1-0.
Aulicino's standout sophomore season continued with her third straight game with a goal. She has now contributed to the last eight Wildcat goals and is up to four goals and six assists on the season.
The 'Cats had numerous opportunities on the day, with Ingrid Falls, Regan Steigleder, and Hallie Pearson all getting in behind the DePaul backline for quality opportunities. Steigleder also had a header in the box that just flashed wide of goal.
Overall, Northwestern outshot the visitors 11-6 and had an 8-1 corner kick advantage.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood earned the shutout with two saves, a testament to a strong defensive effort from the Wildcat backline. Pearson, Danika Austin, Ella Hase, Julietta Thron and Nicole Doucette all contributed minutes in defense for the clean sheet, the second of the season.
Northwestern now has a week off between games, and will open Big Ten play on Sunday at Iowa when it returns to the pitch. Kickoff from Iowa city is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be streamed on Big Ten Network+.
