The Wildcats have come from behind in two straight games to win, most recently overcoming a 1-0 second half deficit at Illinois State on Thursday night to win 2-1 in overtime. Sophomore midfielder Josie Aulicino scored the golden goal for the Wildcats while junior midfielder Rowan Lapi scored the equalizer in the 76th minute. Aulicino's assisted Lapi's goal and sophomore forward Meg Boade assisted Aulicino's winner.
Northwestern is 3-3 on the season despite playing five of its first six matches away from home. DePaul is 2-4 with wins against UIC and Oakland and losses against Iowa, Michigan, Milwaukee and Loyola.
Aulicino is putting together one of the best seasons as a midfielder across the country. She is tied for the most assists in the Big Ten with six and is tied for fourth in the conference in total points. She has contributed with an assist or a goal on the Wildcat's last seven scores, including five in the last two games.
The Wildcats have a diversified attack with eight point scorers contributing to 11 goals in six games. Three Wildcats other than Aulicino have multiple goal contributions on the year in Aurea Martin, Regan Steigleder and Boade.
Nortwehstern is 8-1 all-time against its rivals in the Noyes-Fullerton Derby and 6-0 at Martin Stadium. The 'Cats are 1-0 in the rivalry under Michael Moynihan, winning 1-0 in the 2017 season opener. The match was Steigleder's collegiate debut, and she started her first ever career match and played 75 minutes.
The Wildcats featured three NWSL draft picks on the day in Marisa Viggiano, Hannah Davison and Kayla Sharples, the lone goalscorer on a late first half set piece. The Blue Demons fielded a NWSL draft pick of their own in Alexa Ben, who was taken by the Chicago Red Stars in the 2018 NWSL Draft, the same franchise that would pick Davison and Sharples a year later.
Senior Blue Demons defender McKenna Angotti also played in that 2017 derby at Martin Stadium, just as an outside back for the Wildcats. Like Steigleder, she started made her collegiate debut in the game, and she wound up playing 64 minutes. Angotti started every game in the Wildcats NCAA Tournament run in 2017 before transferring to Virginia for her sophomore and junior seasons of elibigility. The Los Altos Hills, Calif. native has returned to the Chicagoland area for her senior season and has logged 354 minutes and a start in six games for DePaul.
Depaul assistant coach Kathleen Duwve has also suited up at Martin Stadium before. She graduated as Bowling Green's all-time leader in career winning percentage and goals against average as a goalkeeper and backstopped the Falcons to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2018 in 2019. She visited Martin Stadium in 2018 and played 90 minutes in a 2-0 loss decided by a brace from attacking stalwart Brenna Lovera. Steigleder and current Wildcats Haley Lawson, Julietta Thron, Francesca Docters, Kaylee Titus, Chloe McGhee appeared in the match as did goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood who made two saves in the shutout.
