Golden Goal Gives 'Cats Win Over Redbirds

9/10/2021 12:28:00 AM | Women's Soccer

NORMAL, Ill. – The Wildcats rallied for their second comeback win in a row on Thursday night at Illinois State, winning 2-1 in overtime on a golden goal from Josie Aulicino

The Wildcats have clawed their way back to 3-3 on the season, despite playing five of their first six games away from home

Aulicino continued her scintillating run of form with the game-winning goal in the 99th minute, and an assist on the equalizer. She has either scored or assisted on the last seven Wildcat goals, and has recorded at least a goal and an assist for the second straight game and third game this season. She is up to three goals and six assists on the season through six games, and now leads the Big Ten in assists.

Junior midfielder Rowan Lapi scored the equalizer with a crucial header in the game's 76th minute. She rose up from the edge of the box to loop in a header to the back post on an excellent set piece delivery from Aulicino. Lapi's goal was her first of the season and third of her career.

Northwestern completely dominated the second half and had chances to win the game, including a header from Danika Austin in the 88th minute that was barely kept out by a fine save from the Redbird keeper.

Aulicino's game winner came late in the first overtime period, when she picked up the ball in her own half, made a 50+ yard run, found Meg Boade in space on the right hand side with an excellent through ball and continued her run into the box. Boade sent in a perfect cross in front of goal and Aulicino headed it home. Boade picked up her third point of the season with the assist. The 'Cats were ultimately rewarded for their superiority on the night, outshooting the hosts 19-7. and 8-5 in shots on goal. They held an 11-0 corner kick advantage as well.

Northwestern returns to Martin Stadium on Sunday for its final nonconference game of the season, a Chicago rivalry matchup against DePaul. The Central-Fullerton derby will kick off at 3 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network+.
