EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 4 Northwestern Field Hockey opened its season in dominant fashion with an emphatic 4-0 shutout victory over. No. 6 UConn at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats put a consistent offensive pressure on UConn throughout the game, outshooting UConn 16-4 while the defense held the Huskies to just two shots over the final three periods.
After a scoreless first period, reigning NFHCA All-American Bente Baekers kicked off the scoring for the 'Cats early in the second off a successful penalty corner attempt. Minutes later, Peyton Halsey extended the lead to 2-0 with a succesful rebound off a Baekers shot attempt.
NU carried a 2-0 lead into the half, but was not finished scoring as Maren Seidel added a pair of goals in the second half. The senior from Cologne, Germany intercepted a pass from the Huskies goalie to make it 3-0, and added a deflection off yet another succesful penalty corner attempt from the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats were missing five starters in their first contest of the fall 2021 season–as Maddie Zimmer, Lauren Wadas, Annabel Skubisz, Alia Marshall and Kayla Blas are currently in Chile representing the United States U-22 National Team in the Junior Pan American Games. The 'Cats' five representatives on Team USA led all collegiate programs in the nation.
This marks the highest ranked win for the Wildcats since defeating No. 2 Iowa in back-to-back games at Lakeside Field this season. It also extends the Wildcats' home winning streak to nine-consecutive games when playing at the friendly confines of Lakeside Field, dating back to October, 2019.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats are back in action at Lakeside Field on Sunday as they host another fellow 2020 NCAA Tournament qualifier in No. 21 Miami (Ohio). Coverage will kick off at Noon CT, with the action streamed on BTN+.
