Late Penalty Kick Sinks Wildcats in Opener

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – Northwestern dropped its season opener, 2-1, at Chicago State on Thursday night at Seatgeek Stadium after the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
The 'Cats dominated possession throughout most of the evening and outshot the hosts 11-8 and 4-2 in shots on goal. They could not capitalize on their second half superiority and were left on the wrong end of the decision after a Cougar counterattack earned a spot kick in the closing moments of the game.
Sophomore midfielder Rom Brown scored the first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick in the 32nd minute. The set piece delivery came from junior midfielder Vicente Castro, who lofted a perfect ball at the back post for Brown to power home. The goal was the second of Brown's career while Castro recorded his seventh career assist.
Castro and first-year midfielder Paul Son had the best chances of the night for the Wildcats on breakaway opportunities, but both were just offsides against the Cougar's high defensive line. Brown also had a few second half chances in the box on crosses, but could not find a second go-ahead goal.
Graduate Miha Miskovic started in goal and made two saves while graduate student Ethan Bandre played the second half. Bandre dove the correct way on the decisive penalty kick, but the shot was just past his fingertips.
Ibraheim Obeid started at outside back as a first-year in his first ever game as a Wildcat, while first-years Darley Florvil, Collin McCamy, and Son also made their competitive debuts.
The Wildcats and head coach Russell Payne will look to secure their first win of the fall season on Monday with another crosstown road trip to UIC on Monday evening.
