TOKYO — Northwestern's Federico Burdisso is bringing a pair of bronze medals back to Evanston from the Tokyo Olympics. The Pavia, Italy, native placed third in the 200-meter butterfly and was a member of Italy's 400 medley relay team that finished on the podium.

The Italian placed third in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:54.45 and is the first Wildcat to medal at an Olympic Games since Matt Grevers earned three, including two golds, at the 2012 London Games. He is the first athlete to medal at the Olympics while enrolled at Northwestern University since Nancy Simons did so at the 1956 Games. Kristof Milak turned in an Olympic-record time of 1:51.25 to earn gold, while Japan's Honda Tomoru earned silver with a time of 1:53.73.

Burdisso and his teammates turned in a time of 3:29.17 in the 400 medley relay to take bronze, behind Great Britan's European record time of 3:27.78 and the United States' world record time of 3:26.78.

The Pavia, Italy, native swam for the Wildcats as a first year in 2019-20, when he set school records in the 200 fly and 200 free in addition to claiming 18 first-place finishes. Burdisso is the Italian record holder for the 200 fly after he turned in a 1:51.98 at a regional meet in March of 2021. He stayed in Italy for the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 protocols and Olympic training.
