EVANSTON, Ill. – Graduate student Morgan Newport was named the Big Ten Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday in their final weekly awards haul of the season.
Newport takes home her second Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season after an immaculate Senior Weekend performance in the Wildcats' regular season finale vs. Nebraska in which the 'Cats won three of four games.
The DeKalb, Ill. native reached base in 10 of 14 plate appearances to lead the team with a .714 on-base percentage, she did not get out once in the Wildcats' last two games of the series. Additionally, Newport led the team with six hits and six RBI over the four-game series, including two home runs, a double, four walks and three runs scored.
Newport finished the regular season ranked second in the Big Ten with 38 RBI and tied for third with 10 homers. She is currently boasting a career-high .324 batting average.
To cap things off, Newport started in the circle in her final home game at Sharon J. Drysdale Field on Sunday and tossed her third complete game of the season, striking out a season-high seven batters en route to a 6-5 Northwestern victory.
