On the first pitch of the 12th inning, the junior shortstop sent one over the fence to give Northwestern a 6-5 win over Rutgers. The Wildcats improved to 11-8 on the year, while the Scarlet Knights fell to 9-9.
The Wildcats tallied five solo shots on the day, including two from Goosenberg, while Anthony Calarco, Stephen Hrustich and Michael Trautwein each had one.
Garrett Boeckle picked up the win after 3.0 innings of work. Mike Doherty posted a quality start, going 7.0 innings, fanning six and holding the Scarlet Knights to five hits and one run.
After Rutgers scrapped across a run in the top of the first, Goosenberg brought the score even in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot over the left field wall. It was his seventh home run of the season.
Trautwein put the Wildcats in front, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth with an opposite field home run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Leo Kaplan doubled to left center to score Ethan O'Donnell and extend NU's lead, 3-1. Hrustich clobbered NU's third solo home run of the day in the bottom of the seventh, giving NU a 4-1 lead.
Rutgers pulled within one in the top of the eighth, before eventually taking a one run lead in the top of the ninth.
Down one run, with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Calarco ripped a solo shot over right field to pull even.
Northwestern and Rutgers will meet in game two on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CT.
