Wildcats Battle Past Gophers, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. β No. 47 NorthwesternΒ groundΒ its way pastΒ Minnesota, 5-2, at the Combe Tennis Center on Friday night in a match that featured four third set tiebreakers across the singles board.Β
Northwestern improved to 9-5 on the season with the win.Β
The Wildcats took the doubles point thanks to wins at No. 2 and Β No. 3 doubles. Dominik Stary and Chris Ephron picked up a dominant 6-1 win at No. 2 and Steven Forman and Natan Spear kept their cool in a 7-6 win featuring an intense 7-5 tiebreak. The No. 7 doubles pairingΒ in the country of Nick Brookes and Simen Bratholm were locked in a tight battle at No. 1 in a 5-6 unfinished result.
Four 'Cats won the first four singles matches to seal the overall result giving Northwestern a 5-0 lead. Presley Thieman cruised in straight sets at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2 while StaryΒ rolled to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Vlad Lobaek at No. 2 singles.Β
Steven Forman and Chris Ephron both gutted out three set comebackΒ wins with final set tiebreaksers, with Forman defeatingΒ Jackson Allen at No. 1, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Ephron prevailing over Siim Troost 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4), Trice Pickens and Nick Brookes both played in tiebreakers of their own with Pickens nearly completing a comeback that came down to an 8-6 breaker.Β
The Wildcats continue their homestand on Sunday against Wisconsin at noon, with the excitement surrounding the first match outdoors at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center since April 22, 2018.Β
