4/13/2021 6:25:00β―PM | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ. β Northwestern fell to No. 10 Rutgers, 2-1, in a close match Friday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights rattled off two quick goals in the first three minutes, putting the 'Cats at a disadvantage early. After that, however, Rutgers found little success on the offensive end. The Wildcats held Rutgers to just one shot over the next three periods.
Northwestern got off three shots in the second period, but none were able to find the goal. Finally, just three minutes into the third quarter, Bente Baekers invaded the circle for an unassisted shot to get the 'Cats on the board.
The Wildcats put up six shots in the final period, but were unable to tie things up and send the game into overtime. Northwestern outshot Rutgers 13-4 and earned five penalty corners, but eight saves from the Scarlet Knights kept the 'Cats at bay.
Northwestern will be back on the field on Sunday at 11 a.m. for a rematch against the Scarlet Knights.Β
