Northwestern's Late Rally Comes Up Short

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern (11-10, 11-10) dropped the rubber match, 6-5, against Rutgers (11-9, 11-9) in an afternoon thriller at Miller Park.
After falling behind 5-0, the Wildcats scored five unanswered to force extra innings. Michael Trautwein got the Wildcats in the scoring column in the bottom of the eighth with a moonshot home run to right field.
Trailing 5-1 headed into the bottom of the ninth, the Wildcats mounted a furious rally. Leo Kaplan started things off with a one-out liner to left field for a single, followed by singles from Tony Livermore and Anthony Calarco. An error and wild pitch helped Kaplan and Livermore score. With Anthony Calarco on base, Shawn Goosenberg hit a ball over the left field fence, his 10th of the season, to tie the game at 5.
David Dunn led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk but the Wildcats could not bring him home. The Wildcats outhit the Scarlet Knights, 10-8, behind another 3-hit performance from Goosenberg and a 2-hit performance from Vincent Bianchina. On the weekend, Goosenberg finished with eight hits in 15 at-bats and four home runs.
Jack Dyke and Jack Pagliarini were strong in relief, combining for 4.1 shutout innings and three strikeouts.
Northwestern will be back at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park next weekend as they host Indiana for a three-game set starting Friday at 3 p.m. and will look to climb back up the Big Ten standings.
