EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern dismantled No. 9 Maryland, 25-12, the most goals scored against Maryland by any opponent in program history.
Junior Izzy Scane led the field with nine goals and three assists. She leads the team with a whopping 51 goals on the season. Senior Lauren Gilbert followed with six goals and seven draw controls. Throughout the game, the 'Cats excelled around the circle thanks to Gilbert and senior Jill Girardi, who posted a career-high of 10 draw controls.
In all, the Wildcats pulled down 24 controls, holding the Terrapins to just 14. Northwestern's offensive power outmatched Maryland's by a landslide. Eight different 'Cats found the back of the net and put up a total of 34 shots on goal. Northwestern also held its ground in the midfield, recording 15 clears on 16 attempts while holding Maryland to just 10 clears on 14 attempts.
Sammy Mueller got the 'Cats on the board first and Maryland quickly followed. Scane and Gilbert then rattled off two goals apiece and built a 4-0 run to take a strong lead. The Terrapins started to chip away at the Northwestern advantage with some success at the draw, but the Wildcats quickly regained control of the game. Scane put up two more goals and an assist, fueling another 4-0 run with just five minutes left in the half. The Wildcats took a strong lead going into the second half, 13-7.
After a slow start for both teams, Maryland found the back of the net first in the final half. Lindsey McKone responded on the next possession with a cannon in a one-on-one situation with the goalie and spurred a 3-0 run by the Wildcats. The Terrapins put up a few goals amid the Wildcat's offensive barrage, but were unable to make any headway into the Northwestern lead. Sophomore Erin Coykendall grabbed a pair of back-to-back goals and Mueller added one more to create a 10-point lead and set the clock running halfway through the final frame. Despite a huge lead, Northwestern kept firing and pulled off a five-point run, their longest of the game.
Northwestern will return to the field on Monday to face the Terrapins once more. The game is set for noon on the Big Ten Network.
