Northwestern Sweeps Rutgers Series with 21-7 Win

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The 'Cats easily completed a successful season sweep of No. 15 Rutgers with a 21-7 win Sunday afternoon.
Junior Izzy Scane and senior Lauren Gilbert once again led the field in scoring with six and four respectively. In all, nine different 'Cats found the back of the net and six registered multiple goals. Northwestern led in every category grabbing 16 ground balls and 18 draw controls. Goalkeepers Madison Doucette and Logan Lillie combined for 11 saves, both notching a save percentage of 0.600 or higher.
Scane once again sparked the Northwestern offense, scoring the first goal of the game and assisting on the second. Six different 'Cats contributed at least one goal to a long 8-0 run halfway through the frame to put Northwestern up 10-1, with Scane and Holmes putting up two goals apiece. By the end of the half both Scane and Gilbert earned themselves a hat trick. Doucette was a brick wall in the goal, stopping eight of 12 Rutgers' shots on goal and allowing the Wildcats to go into the second half up 12-4.
Northwestern opened the second half with another goal from Scane which kept the momentum with the 'Cats. Scane then scored back-to-back goals to spur a 5-0 run, which set the clock running. Brennan Dwyer capped off the run with her first goal of the season, after cleanly securing the draw control. She found the back of the net one last time to tie her career high in goals. First-year Hannah Johnson ended the game on a high note with her first collegiate goal.
The Wildcats will return home to face Maryland, first on Saturday at 11 a.m. and then on Monday at noon.
