Izzy Scane scores seven on Sunday to lead No. 4 'Cats in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. – The 'Cats pulled off a sweep of Johns Hopkins this weekend, improving to 3-0 on the season and starting a winning streak.

Junior Izzy Scane led the field with an impressive seven goals, while senior Lauren Gilbert followed with four. Graduate student Sammy Mueller, senior Lindsey McKone and junior Elle Hansen each contributed two apiece. Gilbert and sophomore Erin Coykendall served as master distributors for the 'Cats putting up two assists in addition to their goals. In addition to her offensive production, Gilbert was also dominant at the draw circle, pulling down a game high nine for the Wildcats.

Northwestern once again pressured Johns Hopkins heavily at midfield and the Blue Jays only completed 17 successful clears out of 28 attempts. The 'Cats put up a combined 43 shots while Johns Hopkins only managed 24. Northwestern came out on top in one-on-one matchups as well, posting 20 ground balls, outpacing Johns Hopkins' 16. The draw was once again a point of success for the Wildcats, posting 21 draw controls to only eight from the Blue Jays.

Scane got the 'Cats on the board early with a successful free position. The Blue Jays responded quickly with a goal of their own to tie it up before Hansen found her third goal of the season from Coykendall to give the 'Cats a slim advantage. The teams traded possessions before a turnover allowed Mueller to extend the lead. Johns Hopkins scored another to bring it back within one but McKone and Coykendall weren't having it; scoring in back-to-back possessions. Gilbert grabbed her first goal of the day with five minutes left in the half and another with only a minute left to put the Wildcats up 8-5 going into half time.

The story of the first half was two Wildcat goals for every one of the Blue Jays', but they were unable to gather the momentum to go on a significant run. That changed in the second half and the 'Cats came out of the locker room firing, with Scane and McKone scoring easily on back to back possessions to put Northwestern up five. Johns Hopkins tried to crawl back in with a goal of their own but the Wildcats pulled off a 5-0 run with a trio of back-to-back goals from Scane. The Wildcats slowed things down and played a balanced offense to end the game now that they commanded a dominant lead over the Blue Jays. Gilbert, Scane and Mueller added a goal each to bring home an 18-9 victory.

Northwestern will return to Evanston for another double-header weekend against Penn State. The 'Cats will face the Nittany Lions first on Friday at 6 p.m. before meeting them again on Sunday at noon.
