EVANSTON, Ill. The Wildcats took down the Hawkeyes in a nail-biter at home Saturday night. The 'Cats had a hot start winning the first set 25-18. After falling short in the second and third sets, they were able to fire back up and come out on top 25-21 in the fourth and 16-14 in an exciting fifth.
It was all about the career-highs for first-year setter Alexa Rousseau. Not only did she have 39 assists, but she also contributed defensively with five blocks and seven digs. She led the team in aces, logging three, one in which was the game winning point in set five. She capped off her strong performance with eight kills.
Aces were the name of the game at Welsh Ryan Arena Saturday night after the 'Cats served up a team total of seven. To complement Rousseau's three, Megan Miller contributed to the nine with two, while Ivey Whalen and Abryanna Cannon each picked up one.
The 'Cats were able to find success at the net thanks to double-digits numbers in kills with 16 from Thomas-Ailara, 11 from Alana Walker, and 10 from Nia Robinson. Desiree Becker and Abryanna Cannon also helped keep the offense alive with six kills from Becker and eight from Cannon.
The Wildcats strong defensive performance served as the backbone to their offensive success. Abryanna Cannon and Temi Thomas-Ailara led the team in digs, each adding 13 to the stat sheet while Megan Miller had 9. Amy Wang dug up her first two digs of the season while Charlotte Cronister picked up seven.
Desiree Becker was able to shut down the Hawkeyes at the net with a season-high four blocks. Alana Walker also defended the Wildcats with three blocks.
The 'Cats are back home Friday, March 6th to take on the Michigan State Spartans. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
