EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's strong defense propelled the team to a 61-49 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten opener on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play while dropping the Badgers to 2-7.
Northwestern held its fourth opponent this season under 50 points, and limited the Badgers to 37% shooting from the field and 21% shooting from deep while forcing 23 turnovers. The 'Cats also enjoyed a strong day on the boards, outrebounding the visitors 40-28 including a 16-4 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Senior guard Veronica Burton led the team with 19 points, six assists, and four steals including a perfect 12-12 mark from the free throw line. It is Burton's second career game with a 12-12 mark from the line, and she again tied for the second most free throws made without a miss in program history.
First year Caileigh Walsh was efficient offensively in her 18 minutes, adding 14 points on 6-12 shooting including two made threes.
First year guard Melannie Daley made her first career start in place of the injured Lauryn Satterwhite, and recorded six points and three steals.
With Daley starting alongside Walsh and Jillian Brown, it was the first time that three first-year 'Cats started in the same game since March of 2014, when program greats Nia Coffey, Ashley Deary and Christen Inman did so.
Numerous Wildcats appeared off the bench to make contrubitions with the sophomore trio of Paige Mott, Jasmine McWilliams and Anna Morris all scoring.
Northwestern receives some midweek rest before continuing its December homestand on Saturday against Delaware. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT on B1G+.
