EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern grounded Temple, 68-58, for its fifth straight win on Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats improved to 9-3 on the season and 7-0 at home. It is the longest undefeated streak at home to start a season since 2016-17, when the 'Cats won their first 10 games at the old Welsh-Ryan Arena. Temple dropped to 5-5 on the season.
The 'Cats forced 19 turnovers and scored a crucial 18 points off of those turnovers. The 'Cats also made hay on 19 fast break points.
The Wildcats saw significant contributions from their bench yet again with 29 points. Junior Laya Hartman added 11 points on 4-7 shooting with three rebounds and three assists while sophomore Paige Mott recorded eight points and a career-high nine rebounds along with two blocks and three steals.
Senior guard Veronica Burton commanded affairs with one of her best-ever games as an orchestrator. She finished with 12 points, 10 assists and no turnovers or fouls committed, to go with eight rebounds, four steals and a block – two rebounds shy of a triple-double. She tied her career-high in assists and posted the third double-double of her career.
Senior forward Courtney Shaw finished with her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with a block and two steals.
The last time two Wildcats had a double-double in the same game was in February against Ohio State when Burton and Lindsey Pulliam did so.
First-year guard Melannie Daley also added 10 points on 4-8 shooting.
The Wildcats finish their December homestand with the marquee matchup of the nonconference schedule against Oregon on Tuesday. The Solstice Showdown against the Ducks is set for a 8 p.m. CT tip and will be televised on Big Ten Network.
