West Lafayette, Ind. - Northwestern Women's Swimming & Diving won the Purdue Invite over the weekend, with the Northwestern Men finishing third in a strong meet for both squads.
The story of the weekend for the Wildcats came in the men's 200-medley relay, where Manuel Martos Bacarizo, Kevin Houseman, Federico Burdisso, and Andrew Zhang shattered a school record with a time of 1:24.68. That time beat the previous Northwestern mark, set in 2007 by a group that included six-time Olympic medalist Matt Grevers, two-time Olympian Mike Alexandrov (Bulgaria), and NCAA champions Kyle Bubolz and Bruno Barbic.
The Wildcats took third in the event, just behind defending national champions Louisville, with a group that includes 2020 Tokyo bronze medalist Burdisso (Italy).
It was another strong meet for the middle-distance swimmers for Northwestern, as Hannah Brunzell won the 200-yard breaststroke and Emma Lepisova took the 200-yard backstroke. The school record-holder in the event, Brunzell has now won the 200-breast in meets against No. 12 Indiana, UIC and Illinois. Her 2:08.19 swim in West Lafayette once again put Brunzell within the NCAA "B" Standard in the event as her time continues to drop.
Lepisova's performance in the 200-back was the best by a WIldcat this season, as the bronze medalist at the 2021 Big Ten Championships once again hit the NCAA "B" standard and grabbed another victory in the event after winning the 200-back against UIC and Illinois.
The Wildcats are back in the pool on December 18, as they take on Georgia Tech and Miami (FL) in Atlanta.
