'Cats Unsaddle Gauchos For Second Straight Win

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern holstered UC Santa Barbara for 72-46 win at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday afternoon. The 'Cats held their opponents under 50 points for the second game to start their season.

Northwestern improved to 2-0 with a trademark performance from Joe McKeown's Blizzard defense. The 'Cats held the visitors to 32% from the field, 25% from deep, and forced 21 turnovers, which translated into 29 points for the Wildcat offense. NU piled up 14 steals and nine blocks as team, matching the previous season-high for blocks already. 

Senior guard Veronica Burton led the way with a brilliant afternoon, scoring 20 points on 7-13 shooting and a 4-6 clip from three while adding seven assists five steals, a block and three rebounds. With her assists she was responsible for 37 of Northwestern 72 points.

Senior forward Courtney Shaw continued her productive start to the season, notching her second career double-double after claiming her first in the opener. She recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds and added five steals in a stellar defensive effort. Along with center Caileigh Walsh, she helped limit All-Big West preseason selection Ila Lane to just seven points on 3-8 shooting with two turnovers. 

Walsh made a splash herself on offense with three made threes. She finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. 

The Wildcats shared the ball beautifully throughout the second half, finishing the game with 20 assists as 11 different Wildcats put points on the scoresheet. Senior Sydney Wood dished five helpers for the second game in a row. 

Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday night to welcome crosstown rival Loyola. The 'Cats will welcome back two program greats in Maggie Lyon and Abi Scheid who both serve on the Ramblers coaching staff. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed on B1G+.
