EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats look to keep rolling on Sunday at home against UC Santa Barbara. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. at Welsh-Ryan Arena and will be streamed on B1G+.

Northwestern hit all the right notes in its season opener against UIC on Wednesday, smothering the Flames in a 72-49 win.

The 'Cats held the Flames to just 29% from the field and recorded eight blocks, giving them the 11th highest average in the country. Caileigh Walsh recorded four in her 25-minute debut, which is already more than any Wildcat recorded last year.

The Wildcats shared the ball and thrived in transition, racking up 17 assists, including six from Veronica Burton and five from Sydney Wood. The Wildcats' 16 assists per game last year ranked 27th in the country.

Four of the five members in the top-ten ranked incoming first year class made their debut and recorded a bucket. Walsh and Jillian Brown both started, while Melannie Daley added a scoring spark off the bench with eight points on 4-7 shooting.

Burton did not disappoint in the first game of her nationally anticipated senior season, scoring 22 points on an efficient 8-13 clip and a 3-4 mark from deep, including a half court buzzer beaater. She filled the stat sheet with six assists, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Senior Courtney Shaw stood out in her new role as the power forward/wing, overwhelming the Flames for a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds, tied for a career high. She also made a career-high five free throws.

UCSB is 1-0 to start the season after a 61-58 home win against Loyola Marymount. Danae Miller led the way with 18 points.

Junior UCSB center Ila Lane was named to the 2022 Lisa Leslie Award Watch List recognizing the top 20 centers in women's college basketball. Lane opted-out of the 2020-21 season, but  in her freshman campaign in 2019-20, she was the only player in the Big West to average a  double-double with 15.3 points and 13 rebounds per game.
