EVANSTON, Ill. — Veronica Burton, Lauryn Satterwhite and Sydney Wood will serve as captains for the upcoming women's basketball season, head coach Joe McKeown announced last week.
"Proud to announce our tri-captains for the 2021-22 season," McKeown said in a statement. "An extraordinary group that has incredible leadership qualities. Lauryn, Syd and Veronica will represent Northwestern at the highest level. We're really excited to have them lead our program."
The group leads Northwestern into an exciting year for the program coming off a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a win over UCF in the first round. All three stars also played pivotal roles in the team's Big Ten Championship in the 2019-20 season.
Burton led the nation in steals and steals per game last season en route to her second-straight Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Award. Wood followed close behind in steals, coming away with the third most in the conference while putting together the best scoring season of her career. Satterwhite also recorded her best season as a Wildcat last year, more than doubling her previous best mark for points per game.
The Wildcats open the season with an exhibition game at home against Parkside on November 7. The regular season tips off three days later with a clash at Welsh-Ryan Arena with cross-town rival UIC.
