EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 15 Northwestern takes on No. 16 Michigan in a tantalizing Big Ten clash Sunday. Tip-off is set for 4 p .m. CT on ESPN2.
The Wildcats (4-1, 2-1 B1G) are coming off their first loss of the season, a 65-63 heartbreaker at Nebraska. The Huskers scored on a buzzer-beating putback attempt after the Wildcats erased a nine-point fourth quarter deficit.
The 'Cats were ultimately undone by free throw shooting (10-22) and rebounding (47-35) despite a +17 turnover margin. Overall the 'Cats shot just 35% from the field.
NU continues to dominate ball control metrics with the best turnover margin (+14.8) in the country and the fifth-best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.67) nationally.
Reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Veronica Burton leads the country in steals per game with 4.8. With six steals against Nebraska, she moved to 204 in her career, the fifth most in program history.
Northwestern and Michigan played three competitive games last year. The Wildcats swept the regular season series at both home arenas, but the Wolverines won in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals in Indianapolis.
Sunday's matchup also features two of the Big Ten Preseason Players of the Year in Naz Hillmon and Lindsey Pulliam. In last year's three contests the two averaged 18.3 and 15.0 points, respectively.
