This Week With the 'Cats, January 19
Northwestern University athletics will have five programs in action this week. Three of which will be participating in their season-opening play.
Swimming & Diving
The Northwestern Swimming & Diving Program will host their first set of home meets in their conference schedule against Iowa and Penn State this week. The 'Cats will face the Hawks on Friday, Jan. 22 and the Nittany Lions on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Both the men's and women's teams are hoping to bounce back after losses against Indiana and Michigan last week. The program is also coming off strong, although abrupt, 2019-2020 campaigns, where both teams had winning seasons and were undefeated in conference meets.
Volleyball
Northwestern volleyball will return to the court for the first time since Nov. 30 2019. The 'Cats will have a pair of matches against Rutgers on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan. 23.
The 'Cats will bring back a wealth of talent and experience from last season, while adding three new faces to their roster. Temi Thomas-Ailara, Nia Robinson, Alana Walker, Desiree Becker and Ella Grbac will all be returning and each ranked in the top five on the team in kills last season (at 398, 369, 237, 132 and 123, respectively).
Wrestling
The wrestling team will stay on the road and travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to face a pair of Big Ten foes on Saturday, Jan. 23. First the 'Cats will face Maryland at 12 p.m. CST and then Nebraska at 1:30 p.m. CST.
In their season-opening dual last week at Purdue, two Wildcats picked up major decisions victories with Yahya Thomas earning a 16-4 win at 149 lbs, while Chris Cannon earned an 11-3 major decision at 133 lbs in his first-ever dual for Northwestern. Last year, the 'Cats earned a dominant win over Maryland, 37-9, in their final conference dual of 2020.
Men's/Women's Tennis
Both programs will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for the ITA Kick-Off weekend. The men's team will face North Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 24, while the women's team will match-up with North Carolina State. As a part of the tournament, the men will also face Duke and South Carolina on Monday, Jan. 25 and the women will battle both Wake Forest and UCF.
The men's program faced a short schedule due to COVID-19, but showed promise in their early matches. They went 10-5 overall coming up with an impressove upset against No. 7 Columbia. The women's program will return a wealth of talent from the 2019-20 season.
