Wildcats Improve Streak to Three Games against USC-Upstate

3/7/2020 3:53:00 PM | Baseball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Northwestern won its third game in a row on Saturday, 4-2, at South Carolina Upstate behind another impressive showing from the pitching staff.

The Wildcats improved to 6-6 and are back at .500 for the second time this season.

Redshirt sophomore Tyler Uberstine turned in a quality start and earned the win to improve to 2-0. He threw 7.0 innings and struck out three, while allowing just two runs, five hits and one walk. He now owns a 2.86 ERA on the season and is the first pitcher to two wins on the Wildcat staff.

First year Coby Moe earned the save after facing the last six batters of the game. He crucially stranded runners on second and third to end the eighth inning before finishing off the save with three swinging strikeouts in the ninth.

The Wildcat offense continued its balanced production, with one RBI each coming from Stephen Hrustich, Casey O'Laughlin, Jack Anderson and Kyle Burnett, Jr. Charlie Maxwell and Leo Kaplan both had multi-hit days and scored a run apiece.

Northwestern grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second behind RBI singles from O'Laughlin and Anderson and an RBI groundout from Burnett. After the Spartans scored the second run in the seventh, Hrustich gave the 'Cats an insurance run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to score Maxwell.

NOTES
  • Uberstine has now thrown five or more innings in his four starts. In three of those starts Uberstine has allowed two runs or less.
  • Moe has now totaled three scoreless appearances out of the pen this season. He earned the win for 1.2 scoreless innings of work at South Carolina in extra innings and now has a save.
  • With two hits on the day, Kaplan's batting average is up to .327 on the season.
  • Northwestern's last three-game win streak came on Apr. 27 - May 5 last season, when the 'Cats won recorded a win against Michigan State, Illinois State and then two against Nebraska.
