EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will look to capture its first Big Ten Tournament title in program history this weekend. The second-seeded Wildcats open the tournament with a double-bye and will take on Michigan on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. CT, with the action broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and WNUR.
If they advance, the semi-final game is set for 8 p.m. CT on Saturday on BTN and the championship will tip-off at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday on ESPN2.
No. 11 Northwestern concluded the regular season 26-3 overall with a 16-2 record in the Big Ten, capturing a share of its first Big Ten regular season title in 30 years.
Before the tournament, an astounding six Wildcats were honored with conference awards. Coach Joe McKeown was named Big Ten Coach of the Year, the first Northwestern coach to win the award since Don Perelli in 1990. Sophomore guard Veronica Burton was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, the second Wildcat in program history to win the award.
Junior guard Lindsey Pulliam was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team by both the coaches and media. Senior forward Abi Scheid was also a first team selection by both the coaches and media. Burton additionally earned a second team selection by both the coaches and media and a spot on the Big Ten All-Defensive Team.
Pulliam ranks third in the conference in scoring with 19.1 points per game. She leads all Big Ten players with nine 25+ point games this season. Scheid leads the country in three-point percentage with a rate of 48.6 percent. That mark is on pace to set the program record for highest single season three-point percentage and would rank fourth in best Big Ten single-season three point percentages.
Senior center Abbie Wolf was also an All-Big Ten honorable mention by both the coaches and media while sophomore guard Sydney Wood was an honorable mention by the media.
Northwestern enters Saturday's contest having won four of its last five Big Ten Tournament openers. The 'Cats' longest tournament run was in their 2015-16 campaign when the team, seeded No. 12, upset the No. 5 and No. 4 seed to advance to the semifinals.
Following the Big Ten Tournament, the Wildcats will learn their seed for the NCAA Tournament on Monday, March 16. The 'Cats last made the tournament in the 2014-15 season.
