INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Northwestern fell to Michigan 67-59 in their third match-up with the Wolverines in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament.
Sophomore Veronica Burton led the Wildcats with 15 points and junior Jordan Hamilton followed close behind with a season high of 14. Northwestern led the floor in bench points 24-2 and points off turnovers 14-8.
The 'Cats got off to a slow start in the first quarter, accruing an 8-0 deficit. A three from Burton opened up scoring for the Wildcats, and they ended the quarter with their own 7-0 run. A bucket from Hamilton in the final ten seconds gave the 'Cats the lead 13-12.
Bench points gave the Northwestern offense the jolt it needed to maintain the lead at the end of the first half, 32-31. The second quarter was tightly contested, with the lead passing back and forth between the teams. Hamilton came in clutch again, hitting a three with two seconds left to play and led the team with 11 points.
The Wolverines responded to Wildcat dominance and took the lead to end the third quarter, 49-44. Senior Abi Scheid got the ball rolling the fourth, scoring five within a minute and fellow senior Byrdy Galernik brought fire off the bench to bring Northwestern back within three. However, the 'Cats were unable to get the finish and dropped the match to Michigan.
Northwestern will hold their selection show on Monday March, 16 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Doors will open at 5 p.m. CT.
