Wildcats Drop Pair of Ranked Matchups on Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. – Battling a pair of ranked teams on Saturday, Northwestern had two setbacks on Saturday afternoon, dropping close decisions to No.12 Tennessee and No. 22 Arizona State.

First year Angela Zedak gave the 'Cats an early lead in game one, driving in her first-career RBI via an infield single to the shortstop. Tennessee evened the score in the bottom of the first with a solo homer and then took the lead in the second on a pair of singles.

The 'Cats battled back to even the score in the top of the fourth after sophomore Jordyn Rudd drove in junior Rachel Lewis on an RBI-single down the right field line. However, Tennessee responded with a three-run home run in the next inning, which proved to be the difference in a 6-3 decision.

Pitching 1.1 innings of relief against the Lady Vols, Morgan Newport struck out three while allowing just one run.

Lewis wasted no time getting the bats going in game two, launching a two-run homer over the left field scoreboard on the game's first pitch, her first long ball of the season.

Newport also tallied her first homer of the year via a two-run shot in the fourth inning to put the Wildcats on top, 4-2. Two innings later, sophomore Maeve Nelson tallied her first RBI of the season on a two-out single through the right side to put the 'Cats on top.

However, Arizona State had the last say with a home run in the bottom of the seventh, to take the game, 6-5.

The Wildcats will conclude their weekend at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT against Portland State.
