Evanston, Ill. - No. 3 Northwestern kicked off their season in style with a dominant 30-3 win over Detroit Mercy on Friday at Ryan Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats' 30 goals are the most they have scored in a single game under head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, and the sixth-most single-game goals in NCAA history.
The 'Cats got off to a quick start in the first half with senior Lindsey McKone scoring the team's first goal just 11 seconds into the game and sophomore Izzy Scane adding on another just 12 seconds after that. The 'Cats' quick pace continued throughout the half, and Northwestern took a 20-1 lead into the break.
Northwestern put forth a balanced effort in the second half. Seven different players scored goals and five notched at least one assist. First-year Maddy Balter led the offense with two goals and an assist.
The Wildcats had an incredible offensive showing overall, with four players turning in hat tricks. Joining Scane were juniors Lauren Gilbert and Jill Girardi and first-year Dylan Amonte, who made her collegiate debut. Amonte was one of ten first-years to make her debut against the Titans, and one of six to score a goal.
