Wildcats Defeat No. 7 Columbia, Blank UIC in Doubleheader
2/29/2020 7:51:00 PM | Men's Tennis
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's tennis was victorious in both matches of its Saturday doubleheader, including an impressive win over a Columbia team ranked No. 7 in the nation. The 'Cats followed up the exciting first match with a more straightforward victory against UIC in the evening.
With the pair of wins, Chicago's Big Ten Team improved to 8-4 overall on the year.
The early contest provided plenty of drama before culminating in a gutsy win for the 'Cats. Early on in doubles play, Nick Brookes and Simen Bratholm made short work of their set, taking down their opponents 6-2. After the visitors won the next doubles match, the 'Cats hit back and clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win from Dominik Stary and Chris Ephron, taking a 1-0 team lead.
Ephron took the momentum right into singles play, wrapping up his match quickly with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-3). Trice Pickens followed close behind with a 6-3, 6-4 win, giving the 'Cats a commanding 3-0 lead and putting the squad just one point away from a huge win.
Columbia refused to make it easy for the hosts, however, as the four remaining singles contests all went to a decisive third set. The Lions came out on top in each of the next three matchups to finish, knotting the team score at three apiece.
With the match on the line, it all came down to Steven Forman and Jackie Tang at No. 2 singles. After taking a tight first set in a tiebreak and dropping the second, Forman needed the third to secure the win for Northwestern. Tang jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Forman fought his way back to tie it up 6-6. With a 7-4 triumph in the tiebreaker, Forman notched the crucial fourth point to seal the result for the Wildcats.
The nearly-four-hour match seemed to have no ill effects on the hosts, as NU had its way with UIC in the evening action.
The 'Cats clinched the doubles point with wins from Forman/Natan Spear at No. 2 and Russell Berdusco/AJ Joshi at No. 3, taking an early 1-0 lead.
In singles play, the outcome was never in doubt as NU took the first set in all six matchups. Ephron was the first to finish off his opponent, dropping just a single game in his two-set victory. Forman followed suit, winning at No. 1 in dominant fashion (6-1, 6-2).
With the team needing just one more point, Pickens made it happen with some clutch play at No. 4 singles. With the second set tied 4-4, he notched a break for a chance to serve for the match and made it count. His 6-1, 6-4 triumph gave Chicago's Big Ten Team its second win of the day, this time by a score of 4-0.
Northwestern will be back in action next Saturday, March 7, hosting rival Illinois in its first Big Ten contest of the campaign. The match is set for noon CT at Combe Tennis Center.
