'Cats Score Most Points in Program History

BLOOMINGTON, IND – Northwestern Men's Swimming and Diving closed out the 2020 Big Ten Championships with 665 team points and earned their highest finish since 2007 in fifth place.
The Wildcats had athletes competing in four of the six Championship Finals including senior DJ Hwang in the 1650 Free, sophomore Manuel Martos Bacarizo in the 200 Back, first-year Federico Burdisso in the 200 Fly and first-year Henry Schirmer in the Platform dive.
In the 200 Back finals, the 'Cats earned 33 points in the Bonus Final with sophomore Ryan Gridley and Senior Jack Thorne finishing ninth and fourteenth respectively. First-year Aleksa Bobar was the sole #B1GCat in the 100 Free, swimming a season best time of 44.02, to better his previous time by 0.1 seconds.
Northwestern closed out the meet with a season's best time in the 400 Free Relay to earn seventh place. With the relay team of F.Burdisso, Bobar, senior Liam Gately and sophomore Andrew Zhang, NU touched in 2:54.66 to drop over two second off their previous seasons best.
NU's 665 points is the most scored in program history, with 129 points coming from the divers.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in the pool as the divers head to the NCAA Zone Diving Meet which is set to take place March 12-14.
Saturday Prelims
Saturday prelims were highlighted by Federico Burdisso earning the top spot in the 200 Fly. The first-year swam a season best time of 1:42.45 to set a new school record and dropped almost two seconds on his previous best. Fellow first-year Ben Miller also qualified for the 200 Fly in the bonus final with a seasons best time of 1:45.56.
Led by sophomore Manuel Martos Bacarizo, the 'Cats qualified three swimmers through to the 200 Back Final. Martos Bacarizo swam a seasons best time of 1:41.56 to earn the third fastest time of the day. Sophomore Ryan Gridley and Senior Jack Thorne both earned spots in the Bonus Final, with Gridley earning the top spot with a nearly five second improvement.
First-year Marcus Mok earned the highest spot in the Bonus Final of the 200 Breast with a career best time of 1:55.33.
On the Platform Dive, two Wildcats earned spots in the finals with first-year Henry Schirmer and sophomore Evan Labuda earning 308.70 and 301.85 points respectively.
Friday Finals
First-year Federico Burdisso finished second in the bonus final, bettering his previous seasons best by .08 seconds and earn 17 points for the Wildcats. Fellow first-year Ryan King was back in the pool to earn his fourth seasons best in the 400 IM, touching in a time of 3:53.01.
NU earned 38 team points in the 200 Free, with top-20 finishes from first-year Aleksa Bobar, junior Liam Gately and first-year Ben Forbes.
First-year Kevin Houseman was the top finisher in the 100 Breast Bonus final, earning a seasons best time of 52.46 and was the top first-year finisher in the event.
In their highest single-event point earning of the day, the 'Cats earned 42 points in the 100 back led by sophomore Ryan Gridley's seventh place finish.
On the boards, the Wildcats had three scoring opportunities with sophomores Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson finishing seventh and Evan Labuda finishing 15th with 341.80 and 309.30 points respectively. First-year Henry Schirmer finished in the 17th spot to add an additional nine points to the NU total.
Chicago's Big Ten Team closed out the meet with a seasons best time in the 200 Free Relay. With the team of F. Burdisso, sophomore Ezra Mizgala, sophomore Andrew Zhang and Bobar touched in 1:19.54 drop over two seconds on their previous best.
Northwestern will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for the final day of the Big Ten Championships with 200 back prelims beginning at 11 am.
Friday Prelims
Northwestern qualified twelve athletes through to the evening finals including first-years Federico Burdisso, Ryan King, Aleksa Bobar, Ben Forbes, Kevin Houseman and Marcus Mok.
In the 100 back, NU qualified a swimmer in each of the three finals with sophomore Ryan Gridley qualifying for the Championship final, sophomore Manuel Martos Bacarizo qualifying for the Bonus Final and senior Jack Thorne qualifying for the consolation final.
The first-years all put up season best times with Burdisso qualifing for the bonus final of the 100 fly, Mok and Houseman qualifying for the bonus and consolation final respectively of the 100 breast, King in the 400 IM, Forbes in the 200 free and Bobar earning the top spot of the bonus final.
In the 400 IM, the 'Cats also qualified junior Jeffery Durmer in seasons best 3:47.40. In the 100 Breast, sophomore Henry Blaul earned the final spot in the Consolation final in a time of 54.55 and junior Liam Gately also earned a spot in the Consolation final of the 200 free.
Thursday Finals
Junior Liam Gately was the highest Wildcat finisher of the night with a tenth place finish in the 500 Free with a seasons best time of 4:20.42. First-year Ryan King, one of four first-years in the race, also earned a point for the 'Cats finishing in a time of 4:27.04.
Sophomore Ezra Mizgala bettered his prelim time to earn 5.5 points in the 50 free after tying for fourth in Consolation final.
On the boards, the three NU divers combined for 47 points for Chicago's Big Ten Team in the 1 Meter Dive. Sophomore Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson was the top Wildcat finisher with 334.20 points to finish seventh. Fellow sophomore Evan Labuda finished twelfth with 293.60 points and first-year Henry Schirmer finished in 17th to earn nine points.
The 'Cats closed out the day with a season's best time in the 400 Medley Relay to earn 48 points for NU. The team of sophomore Manuel Martos Bacarizo and first-years Kevin Houseman, Federico Burdisso and Aleksa Bobar touched in a time of 3:08.43 to finish sixth overall.
Thursday Prelims
The Wildcats qualified three swimmer through to the evening finals in the 500 and 50 free.
In the 500 free, junior Liam Gately and first-year Ryan King both qualified through with season best times of 4:21.77 and 4:25.07 respectively. Gately will represent NU in the Bonus final and King in the consolation final.
Sophomore Ezra Mizgala also qualified for the consolation final in the 50 free, swimming a seasons best time of 20.04.
On the diving board, NU qualified two athletes through to the finals of the 1 Meter with sophomores Evan Labuda and Yohan Eskrick-Parkinson scoring 297.00 and 309.15 points respectively.
Wednesday Finals
Northwestern kicked off the first day of competition with the relay team of sophomore Ryan Gridley, first-years Kevin Houseman and Federico Burdisso and sophomore Andrew Zhang earning a ninth place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team touched in a season best time of 1:25.97 which also ties them for fifth all-time in program history.
The Wildcats were back with a program best time to earn an NCAA 'B' cut and finish sixth to earn 48 NU points. The relay team of F. Burdisso, first-years Aleksa Bobar, Ben Forbes and junior Liam Gately dropped nearly five seconds off of their previous season best to finish in 6:21.64.
