Wildcats Fall in Tight Series Opener at USF

TAMPA, Fla. - Northwestern came up just short in Friday's pitchers' duel against University of South Florida, dropping game one of the weekend series 2-1 to the Bulls.
The Wildcat batters got off to a very quick start, with senior Charlie Maxwell and first year Stephen Hrustich knocking a pair of back-to-back singles to put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the top of the first. Their effort would prove the only offense the team would get, however, as South Florida RHP Collin Sullivan struck out the side to end the first-inning effort, and then shut down Northwestern's bats through the next five innings.
On the other side of the ball, sophomore Mike Doherty put up a strong start of his own. The righty put in five innings of work for the 'Cats, holding the Bulls scoreless while allowing only two hits and two walks and striking out five. He exited the game after the fifth with the lead in hand. The lockdown performance brings his ERA down to 1.20 after three starts this season.
Senior LHP Sam Lawrence took over for Doherty to open the sixth and issued two quick outs before a pair of back-to-back infield errors and a base hit put the Bulls up 2-1. Despite the defensive blunders, Lawrence continued through 2.1 innings of relief and gave up only the two unearned runs.
First year Jack Sauser closed out the game for the Wildcats in his second appearance of the season. He struck out two to work out of a bases-loaded jam and hold the Bulls' lead to one heading into the ninth, but Northwestern's bats couldn't make up the deficit.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will take the field again tomorrow for the second game of the series against South Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with Tyler Uberstine set to take the mound for the 'Cats.
