COLUMBIA, S.C. - Northwestern picked up an extra-innings victory over South Carolina on Sunday by a final score of 4-3. The 'Cats took two out of three games on the weekend, winning their first series of the year.
Tyler Uberstine delivered another effective start for the Wildcats, allowing just two hits and three runs in five innings against the potent South Carolina offense. His only blunder came on a two-out, three-run homer in the fifth inning.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the third inning after sophomore Jack Anderson reached on a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch.
South Carolina pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a three-run homer.
The 'Cats struck right back when first-year Stephen Hrustich collected his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning, cutting Gamecocks' lead to one. Hrustich went 2-for-5 on the day, raising his season average to .304 (7-for-23). Shawn Goosenberg tied up the game with a pinch hit, sacrifice fly to score Charlie Maxwell.
Hrustich made an impact defensively in left field as well, throwing out the potential go-ahead run at home for the final out of the seventh inning.
After loading the bases on a Leo Kaplan single and two walks, Charlie Maxwell delivered a two-out walk to give the 'Cats a 4-3 lead.
Ryan Bader, Josh Levy, Sam Lawrence, and Coby Moe combined for 4.2 shutout innings of relief to carry the 'Cats to the extra innings victory. Moe collected the win after holding South Carolina scoreless and collecting three strikeouts between the ninth and tenth innings. Junior Jack Pagliarini picked up his second career save after recording the final out of the game.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns to the field on Friday, as they head to Tampa for a three game series against the University of South Florida. First pitch of game one is set for 6 p.m. CT.
