CATHEDRAL CITY, CALIF. – No. 25 Northwestern dropped the first of two games on Saturday morning at the Mary Nutter Classic in a narrow, 6-3 setback to No. 15 Oregon.
After the Ducks scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning, Northwestern responded the very next frame with a three-run homer a la Maeve Nelson to cut the deficit to one. However, that was as close as the 'Cats could get as Oregon pushed across additional runs later in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
Nelson's home run marks her third of the season and second of the weekend, having also hit one yesterday in the Wildcats' weekend opener vs. Auburn.
Danielle Williams went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, her second on the season. Williams also pitched an inning of relief and allowed one run while striking out one.
Also recording hits on the game were Skyler Shellmyer and Gracie Huff, who each hit opposite field singles in the third inning and came around to score on Nelson's three-run blast.
Kaley Winegarner tossed 3.2 innings of relief and allowed just one run while striking out two. The fifth-year senior leads the team with a 1.47 ERA (3 ER/14.1 IP) through 10 games on the year.
The Wildcats are back in action later this afternoon for the second leg of their doubleheader against Long Beach State.
