EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Rachel Lewis was named the Big Ten Player of the Week following an outstanding weekend at the annual ESPN Clearwater/St. Pete Elite Tournament, the conference announced on Monday.
The Liberty Township, Ohio native sparked the Wildcats' offense with a .400 (6-of-15) average, a .867 slugging percentage, a home run and five RBI on the weekend. Five of her six hits went for extra-bases and her four doubles led all players among the 16 teams at the renowned SPC Elite Invitational.
Lewis kicked off her stellar weekend with a double and a walk against No. 15 Georgia. On Saturday, she doubled and smacked a two-run homer to help take down Kansas. Later that day, she hit a bases-clearing double to put the game out of reach in a 6-2 win against No. 5 Florida State.
Lewis topped off the weekend going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored against Virginia Tech.
Lewis is now hitting .379 (11-of-29) with a team-leading .500 on-base percentage and 1.259 OPS (on-base plus slugging) on the season. Her five doubles are tops in the Big Ten and rank seventh best in the nation.
This marks Lewis's second career Player of the Week award, with her last one coming on March 12, 2018. Lewis is the first Wildcat to win Big Ten Player of the Week since Jordyn Rudd won on Feb. 11, 2019.
Northwestern will be back in action next weekend as the Wildcats travel to Cathedral City, Calif. on Friday for the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic, where they will take on five powerhouse teams including No. 1 Washington.
