2/16/2020 3:43:00 PM | Baseball

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Northwestern picked up its first win of the 2020 season on Sunday afternoon, taking down Nebraska-Omaha in the finale of a three-game series.

Redshirt sophomore Tyler Uberstine got the start and had an impressive debut for the Wildcats, picking up his first collegiate win. Uberstine threw five strong innings and surrendered only one run and four hits to go along with no walks and five strikeouts.

Sophomore shortstop Shawn Goosenberg had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 including a three-run double and a stolen base. He currently holds a .500 average (7-for-14) with five RBI to begin the season.

The Wildcats struck first when Charlie Maxwell tripled and was knocked in by Kyle Burnett, Jr. in the bottom of the third inning. Northwestern broke the game open with a huge fourth inning, scoring six runs. David Dunn opened the inning with an RBI single to bring in Michael Trautwein, with the 'Cats bringing in two more runs two batters later on a throwing error. Goosenberg delivered the big blow with a two-out, three-run double to extend the lead to 7-0.

First-year Jack Dyke made his collegiate debut with two solid innings of work on the mound, striking out three batters and surrendering one run.

Ryan Bader and Sam Lawrence combined for two nearly perfect innings of relief work to close the game, allowing only one baserunner on a walk and picking up a combined three strikeouts.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Friday, as they begin a three game series against the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
