Burton's Career Night Propels #19 'Cats Past Spartans, 85-55

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 19 Northwestern knocked down Michigan State, 85-55, their third game in a row with over 80 points and their largest margin of victory in conference play this season.

This brings the Wildcats to 10-2 in conference and 20-3 overall, tied for the most wins in Big Ten with Iowa and Maryland. They moved up to 19th in the most recent national rankings.

Sophomore Veronica Burton shone on offense and defense, with career-highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, her first career double-double. Junior Lindsey Pulliam led the team with 31 points, her second game this season with 30 or more. She is nnow the fastest player in Northwestern history to reach 1500 career points. 

The Wildcats got off to an early lead in the first quarter with a 17-0 run, with scoring drives led by  Pulliam and Burton. By the end of the half Pulliam led the team with 19 and the 'Cats had a comfortable lead, 47-28.

Defense was also on display during the first half. Northwestern scored 19 points off 12 forced turnovers and four 'Cats grabbed a steal. Sophomore Sydney Wood contributed two steals along with six rebounds.

Northwestern ended the third quarter with a 19-4 run, extending their lead to 30 points that they would never relinquish. The 'Cats outscored the Spartans with 40 points in the paint and a 90.9 free throw percentage.

Thursday, the Wildcats will travel to Ann Arbor for a rematch against Michigan. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
