Buie Named Big Ten Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Boo Buie was named the Big Ten Player of the Week following a career-performance on Sunday, the conference announced on Monday.
Buie scored a career-high 30 points on an efficient 9-of-15 shooting performance to help lead Northwestern to an emphatic 79-65 victory over #4 Michigan State at Welsh-Ryan Arena in the Wildcats' Big Ten opener. The win marked Northwestern's first victory over an AP Top-5 opponent since defeating Michigan State in 1979.
Buie's 30 points are the most by a Northwestern player since Scottie Lindsey scored 32 against Iowa on February 25, 2018. The last NU sophomore to score 30+ points in a game was Bryant McIntosh, who scored 33 vs. Loyola (Maryland) on December 27, 2015. Additionally, Buie matched his career high from behind the arc, going 5-of-6 from deep while adding a game-high four assists to go along with three rebounds.
Sunday's win marked the second time in Buie's career in which he put on a career performance at Welsh-Ryan Arena against Michigan State. As a first-year on December 18, 2019, he scored a then-career best 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Since at least 2010, Buie is the only player in college basketball to post multiple 26+ point efforts against Michigan State within their collegiate career.
Also contributing to Buie's Player of the Week honors was a double-digit scoring effort against Quincy on December 15, as Buie contributed 15 points and four assists while matching his career high with five rebounds in the 'Cats' 100-48 win over the Hawks.
Buie's 28 assists through the first five games are the most for a Wildcat since McIntosh (29) in 2017. The Albany, NY native currently ranks fourth in the conference, averaging 5.7 dimes per game.
This marks the first Big Ten weekly honors for Buie, the last NU player to take home Big Ten Player of the Week honors was Lindsey on January 16, 2017.
Northwestern returns to action on Wednesday, December 23 as the 'Cats travel to Bloomington to face Indiana in the Hoosiers' Big Ten opener. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network, with tipoff at 7:30 p.m. CT.
