'Cats Rout Hawks to Close Out Non-Conference Slate

12/15/2020 5:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern coasted past the Quincy Hawks by a score of 100-48 on Tuesday afternoon to close out its 2020-21 non-conference slate.

Miller Kopp paced Northwestern in scoring, finishing the game with 23 points and three boards in 24 minutes. This marks the 11th time Kopp has led the 'Cats in scoring, which leads active Wildcats.

Three other Wildcats finished in double digits in the game. Chase Audige finished with 14 points and has now eclipsed 10+ points in every game this season. Boo Buie and Pete Nance finished with 15 and 12, respectively.

The glass belonged to NU as they out-rebounded Quincy 55-23. Anthony Gaines finished with 11 boards, the second time this season he has claimed 10+ rebounds. Northwestern especially owned the offensive glass, snatching 24 offensive rebounds which led to 26 second-chance points on the other end.

The Wildcats utilized a balanced scoring attack in the first stanza. Four 'Cats had more than five points, with Kopp and Audige leading the charge with nine apiece. NU finished the half on a 20-2 scoring run in the last 6:54 with six Wildcats scoring during the run.

Northwestern played stifling defense in the first half, holding Quincy to just 17 points in the first half, the least the 'Cats have allowed in a first half since allowing just 17 to the Ohio State Buckeyes on March 6, 2019.

The 'Cats hit from all cylinders at the opening of the second half, going out on a 14-0 run to start the period. Miller Kopp led the scoring brigade with 10 of his own during the run. Miller Kopp finished the half with 14 in just eight minutes, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

The 'Cats were lights out from deep in the second half, going 7-for-12 from beyond the arc. Ty Berry and Miller Kopp both were a perfect two-for-two in the second stanza. The Wildcats finished the game 14-of-29 from downtown, marking their third game this season with a three-point percentage better than 45%.

Matthew Nicholson and Dom Martinelli notched career-highs in points in the second half both with four points off the bench in the final four minutes of the game.

Chicago's Big Ten Team begins Big Ten action this upcoming Sunday, hosting the fourth-ranked Michigan State Spartans at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
