EVANSTON — The No. 1 jersey in the Northwestern football program is used to recognize the student-athlete who truly embodies the values and character of the Northwestern football family. Following Friday's practice, Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald presented senior running back Jesse Brown with the famed No. 1 jersey to wear during the upcoming campaign.
The tradition of the No. 1 jersey began in 2011 when Fitzgerald bestowed the honor upon defensive lineman and special teams standout Bo Cisek. Brown joins an illustrious line of 'Cats to wear No. 1 including, Cisek, Tim Hanrahan, Max Chapman, Anthony Walker, Jr., Tyler Lancaster, Chad Hanaoka and Joe Bergin.
Brown has overcome a myriad of injuries during his career. The Lilburn, Ga, native has appeared in 17 games and has scored a pair of touchdowns. Last season, Brown appeared in four games, which included a 79-yard performance against UNLV in the home opener that was cut short after suffering an injury in the contest.
Northwestern football is slated to open the 2020 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 24, vs. Maryland. Kick time has yet to be determined.
