1/9/2020 9:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Minneapolis, Minn. – Northwestern got back on track with a thrilling 56-54 road win against Minnesota on Thursday in Williams Arena.
The Wildcats improved to 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big Ten play. It was the 'Cats first win against Minnesota since they beat the fifth-seeded Gophers in the 2016 Big Ten Tournament.
It was a tight game throughout as the 'Cats went into halftime trailing by one. A 19-10 third quarter gave the 'Cats the lead going into the fourth, but Minnesota tied it up 54-54 with just four seconds remaining in the game. That was until junior guard Lindsay Pulliam hit the game-winning layup as time expired to give the Wildcats the victory.
Senior Abi Scheid led the Wildcat offense in the game with a season-high 24 points on 10-17 shooting. It was the Minnesota native's sixth 20-point game of her career and her second of the season. Pulliam was the only other Wildcat in double-digits, finishing with 13 points.
Sophomore guard Veronica Burton continued to terrorize opponents on defense with five steals. Burton came into the game leading the Big Ten in steals, averaging 3.7 steals per game. She also assisted Pulliam's game-winning layup.
Sophomore forward Courtney Shaw led the Wildcats on the glass with a career-high eight rebounds and was a perfect 3-3 from the floor.
Overall, the Wildcat defense continued its dominance, holding the Gophers to their lowest point total of the season. The Wildcats' 15 steals was tied for the most they've had in a game all season.
Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena for another Big Ten matchup against Purdue on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on BTN.
