First Year Hoffman Impresses at January North American Cup

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Northwestern women's fencing wrapped up the January North American Cup on Monday, led by a top-eight finish in junior sabre from Ilsa Hoffman

The Wildcats competed in Division I foil on Friday, junior saber and Division I epee on Saturday and junior epee on Sunday. 'Cats closed out the competition with junior foil and Division I saber on Monday.
 
In Division I foil, sophomore Alyssa Chen and first-year Anna Biasco led the team. Both Chen and Biasco went 3-3 in pools and earned themselves a bye. Biasco fell short to her first direct elimination opponent, 15-10, while Chen cruised through the round of 128 and 64, 15-11 and 15-8. In the round of 32, Chen fell short to Lauren Scruggs, 15-7 and closed out the day ranked 30th overall. 
 
In junior sabre, first-year Ilsa Hoffman impressed. Hoffman went 5-1 in pools and cruised through the first three rounds of direct eliminations. In the round of 16, Hoffman beat Zoe Kim, 15-13. In the round of 8, she fell short to Ryan Jenkins, 15-9 and finished the day ranked 5th overall. With her notable performance, Hoffman brought home the first medal of the year. 
 
In Division I Epee, both Pauline Hamilton and Blodwen Bindas went 3-3 in the first round of pools. In the round of 128, Hamilton beat her Canadian opponent Leanna Lui, 15-9. Bindas also successfully made her way through the round of 128 after she beat her fellow Wildcat Emma Scala, 15-11. In the second round of pools, Hamilton and Bindas got eliminated and finished the day 79th and 95th respectively. 
 
In junior epee, Bindas was the only one representing the #B1GCats. Bindas went 3-3 in pools and earned herself a bye. In the round of 128, she fell short to Jaclyn Khrol, 15-8, and completed the competition ranked 108th overall. 
 
In Division I saber, Hoffman excelled again. She went 5-1 in the pools. In the first direct elimination, Hoffman beat Charlotte Scalamoni-Goldstein, 15-8. In the round of 64, she fell short to Vivian Lu of Puerto Rico, 15-9, and finished the day 36th overall.
 
In junior foil, first-year Biasco and Julia Shalansky led Chicago's Big Ten Team. Biasco went 4-2 in pools while Shalansky excelled with her 5-1 record. In the round of 128, Shalansky fell short to Katherine Apelian, 15-6. Biasco cruised through her first direct elimination, 15-10. In the round of 64, she fell short to Alexandra Jing, 15-10, and finished the day 55th overall. 
 
The Wildcats will be back in action Jan. 12 at the Western Invitational in San Diego, California. #B1GCats will face Stanford, Air Force, UCSD, Florida and Incarnate Word at the first dual meet of 2020.
