Northwestern Sweeps Western Invitational

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The Northwestern women's fencing team was back in action this Sunday at the Western Invitational hosted by the University of California, San Diego. The Wildcats closed out the weekend undefeated.
 
In the first dual meet of 2020, 'Cats faced Stanford, Florida, Incarnate Word, Air Force and UC San Diego. 
 
First-year Anna Biasco, senior Abby Tartell and sophomore Natalie Kim led their squads with 12, 10 and seven wins, respectively. 
 
In the first round of the meet, 'Cats defeated Stanford, 24-3. The foil squad excelled. Sarah Filby, Alyssa Chen and Biasco all had 3-0 sweeps. First-year epee fencer Blodwen Bindas also impressed with her 3-0 sweep.
 
In the second round, Northwestern faced Florida and cruised through the round, 25-2. Both the saber and foil squads went 9-0. Epee fencers Shirley Luong and Kim also had 3-0 sweeps.
 
Next, 'Cats defeated Incarnate Word, 25-2. Saber squad, once again went 9-0, with sweeps from Jacqueline Hua, Ilsa Hoffman and Tartell. Foil fencer Jerrica Liao and Filby and epee fencers Kim and Luong also went undefeated.
 
In the fourth round, the Wildcats took on Air Force. With 3-0 sweeps from Alyssa Chen and Anna Biasco and 2-1 performances from Abigail Swallow, Thea Nguyen and Tartell, 'Cats secured a 16-11 win against the Falcons.
 
In the last round, Northwestern defeated UCSD, 21-6. With 3-0 sweeps from epee fencers Emma Scala and Julia Falinska and foil fencers Biasca and Filby. 'Cats closed out the weekend, 5-0. 
 
"This was a very good start to the second part of our season," said head coach Zach Moss. "The team performed very well against good competition. We came out strong and never stopped competing. We continue to improve each competition. I look forward to seeing the continued growth of our team over the remainder of the season."
 
Following the Elite Invitational, 'Cats now hold an 11-5 season record.
 
Chicago's Big Ten team will be back in action this weekend at the Philadelphia Duals.
