BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A valiant Wildcat effort came up just short on Wednesday evening in a 66-62 setback to Indiana.
Pat Spencer paced the 'Cats for the second consecutive game with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists. The performance marked the guard's seventh time scoring in double-figures this season.
A.J. Turner, Miller Kopp and Ryan Young all joined Spencer in double-digit scoring. Turner set a season-high with 12 points while Young secured a team-high seven rebounds.
Kopp led NU out of the gate, scoring seven of the first nine points for the Wildcats. The sophomore has now scored double-digit points in four consecutive games.
The 'Cats exploded with an 11-0 run to take the lead with 4:02 to go in the half. The run was sparked by an A.J. Turner triple which he followed up by slicing inside for the go-ahead layup.
After holding Indiana to no field goals over the final 7:05 of the opening frame, Northwestern held a 34-31 lead at halftime. The 'Cats dominated inside, scoring 22 of their points in the paint compared to just 14 for the Hoosiers. Spencer led the Wildcats with 10 points at the break, while Ryan Young chipped in six points and five rebounds.
Early in the second stanza, Pete Nance hit a deep three to extend the Wildcats lead before Spencer got the lead to seven with an emphatic dunk.
After Indiana tied things up, Robbie Beran and Turner both found the bottom of the net to regain the lead. Young then found Kopp on the wing for a three to make it 57-54.
Down three points in the closing seconds, the 'Cats had a chance to tie things up but failed to connect from deep.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will return to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday, Jan. 11 to host Nebraska at 3:30 p.m.
