MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Northwestern fell to Minnesota 77-68 on Sunday evening despite a 22-point performance from Pat Spencer.
Spencer led all scorers, reaching the 20-point mark for the second time in his career and first against a Big Ten opponent. The graduate student stuffed the stat sheet with eight assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals.
Sophomores Miller Kopp and Ryan Young also contributed in a big way for the 'Cats. Kopp scored 14 points on the night, his ninth time in double-digits this season. Young came up a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
The Wildcats used six quick points from Pete Nance to jump out to an early 11-7 lead in the contest. Spencer took over offensively as the half went on, scoring the final eight Wildcat points of the period.
At the break, Spencer led all players with 10 points along with three assists. Ryan Young also grabbed six boards and contributed four points in the opening frame.
Miller Kopp exploded in the second half to close the gap. The sophomore nailed three straight triples on consecutive possessions to propel NU on a 9-0 run.
Pat Spencer kept his foot on the pedal in the second stanza, including laying in an emphatic and-one off a feed from Ryan Young. The duo reversed roles a few minutes later, with Spencer dishing to Young for another easy bucket.
The Wildcats used a pair of late buckets from Robbie Beran to cut the deficit to single-digits. The first-year set career-highs in points (9) and minutes (33) on the night.
Northwestern played with only seven scholarship players available due to multiple injuries.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Wednesday at Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
