Wildcats Streak Snapped at No. 8 Minnesota

5/4/2019 6:15:00 PM | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – No. 14 Northwestern saw its 20-game win streak snapped at No. 8 Minnesota on Saturday in game two of the series by a 8-0 decision after five innings.

Northwestern moves to 42-8 on the season and 21-1 in conference. The Wildcats are now tied with Michigan at 21-1 atop the Big Ten Standings with Minnesota 1.5 games behind at 19-2.

With a win tomorrow over the Golden Gophers, the 'Cats can claim at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. If the 'Cats win and Michigan falls to Maryland, Northwestern can win the title outright.

First year Danielle Williams was credited with the loss and moved to 27-4 on the season after 2.0 innings pitched. Kenna Wilkey threw the other 2.2 innings in the game.

Minnesota took an early 3-0 lead after a rally with two outs in the first inning. The Wildcats put two runners on in the second inning but couldn't capitalize.

The offense was able to knock the Gophers' starter Sydney Smith out of the game in the top of the third, loading the bases with one out thanks to walks from Rachel Lewis, Morgan Nelson and Nikki Cuchran. Amber Fiser entered the game and earned two strikeouts to shut down the threat.

The 'Cats could not punch back after Minnesota extended its lead and the hosts walked off the game in the bottom of the fifth after reaching the run-rule total.

Tomorrow's crucial rubber match begins at 3 p.m. CT. The #B1GCats will be televised nationally for the second day in a row, this time on BTN.
